World Giving Report 2025

The World Giving Report 2025 (formerly the World Giving Index) represents the most comprehensive study of global generosity, covering 101 countries and territories worldwide. This year’s report introduces a more inclusive approach to measuring giving by examining three distinct types: giving directly to people in need, giving to charities, and giving to religious organizations.

Key Global Statistics:

  • 64% of people globally donated money to good causes in 2024
  • 26% of people volunteered their time
  • People donated an average of 1.04% of their income globally
  • The average person volunteered 9 hours during 2024

Africa Leads Global Generosity:

  • Africa emerges as the world’s most generous continent
  • Africans donated 1.54% of their income on average – the highest globally
  • Nigeria tops the global rankings, with people donating 2.83% of their income
  • 72% of Africans gave money to causes, compared to 64% globally

Notable Kenya Findings: Kenya ranks 5th globally in generosity, with people donating 2.13% of their income on average. Kenyans demonstrate strong community solidarity with 86% giving money to various causes and nearly half volunteering their time.

Cause Preferences:

  • Children and young people is the only cause appearing in the top 5 across all continents
  • 29% of global donors support children and young people
  • Environmental causes receive strongest support in Asia and Africa
  • Local charities receive the most support globally (71% of charity donors)

Key Insights:

  • Wealth doesn’t equal generosity: Lower-income countries tend to give more as a percentage of income
  • Social norms matter: Countries with stronger social giving norms donate significantly more
  • Religion activates giving: Religious donors support more causes and give more overall
  • Government encouragement helps: Countries where governments encourage giving see 1.7 times higher donation rates
  • Trust in charities: Africa shows highest trust in charitable organizations

Digital Trends:

  • Social media is the top way donors discover charities globally (14%)
  • Local presence and word-of-mouth are also key discovery methods

Volunteering Highlights:

  • Qatar leads in volunteer hours (27.5 hours per person)
  • Rwanda follows with 26.6 hours per person
  • Kenya ranks 5th globally with 20.6 hours per person

Looking Forward: The report emphasizes the critical role of individual giving in addressing global challenges, especially as government aid decreases. It highlights the power of community solidarity and local philanthropy in driving social change.

About the Research: This is the first global generosity study of CAF’s second century, conducted in partnership with 28 civil society organizations worldwide. The report will be followed by the World Charity Landscape Report in September 2025.
