Publication : The Ubuntu Spotlight – 10th Edition, 2024

Dear EAPN Family,

We are pleased to present another issue of our newsletter and express our deep appreciation for your continued support and readership. This publication remains dedicated to delivering relevant information reflecting our community’s significant progress and advancements.

It is essential to acknowledge our esteemed members and associates. Their contributions, detailed in this newsletter, showcase the extensive and collaborative impact we have achieved throughout the region. The dedicated efforts in philanthropy demonstrated by these organizations deserve our collective appreciation and recognition.

We have hosted successful and transformational forums across different member countries. At the beginning of October, in collaboration with the African Youth Philanthropy Network (AYPN), we hosted the Kenya Connect Breakfast Meeting on October 9th at The Heron Hotel in Nairobi. This meeting served as a critical platform for engaging young leaders in conversations about youth philanthropy and development in Africa. The event brought together a dynamic group of individuals passionate about shaping the continent’s future through philanthropic efforts.

We also hosted a High-level discussion on “Unlocking Domestic Capital for Transformational Progress: Multi-Stakeholder Action in Advancing the Development Agenda” at the Serena Hotel on September 26th. This high-level session convened critical stakeholders from the philanthropic sector, government, and private enterprise for a strategic dialogue on mobilizing domestic resources to drive sustainable and revolutionary development. It explored innovative approaches, actionable frameworks, and cross-sector partnerships essential for unlocking domestic capital.

In response to the urgent digital transformation needs in East Africa, we organized a comprehensive forum on October 24th. The “Strategic Imperative for Digital Transformation: Advancing Collaboration and Partnership Management through Digital Tools” event was held in partnership with the Foundation for Civil Society and the Tanzania Philanthropy Organization in Tanzania. This carefully planned session offered a platform for stakeholders to participate in high-level discussions about using digital tools to improve operational efficiency, enhance remote collaboration, and strengthen partnership management across various sectors.

The following day, we held a Philanthropy-Public-Private Partnerships Roundtable at the same venue about “Collaborative Infrastructure for Sustainable Growth.” Envisioned as a strategic platform, the roundtable ignited purposeful engagement among influential leaders across the philanthropy, public, and private sectors. The goal was to initiate collaboration to address the region’s most critical infrastructure challenges, creating scalable and sustainable solutions that drive equitable development across East Africa.

We sincerely thank our members and partners in Tanzania for their significant collaboration during these forums.

Recognizing the vital need for improved impact assessment and reporting, we joined forces with the Philanthropy Forum of Ethiopia on October 30th to host a forum titled “Enhancing Development Outcomes: Building Expertise in Evidence-Based Measurement and Reporting.” This gathering aimed to improve practitioners’ skills in evaluating and documenting the effects of development projects, facilitating the sharing of advanced techniques and successful strategies.

Still in Ethiopia, we held a significant high-level discussion on ‘Inward Bound: Utilizing Local Resources for Sustainable Growth.’ This roundtable assembled leaders and key decision-makers from government, business, and philanthropic sectors to create a unified and practical approach to optimizing the region’s inherent economic potential.

As the year nears its end, I am pleased to inform you that the EAPN Annual Members Summit is scheduled for November 26-30 at Diamonds Leisure Beach and Golf Resort in Diani, Kenya. This yearly gathering allows us to review our accomplishments and outline our future direction.

Moreover, The East Africa Philanthropy Awards (EAPA), hosted by the East Africa Philanthropy Network, will occur towards the end of this month. We are looking forward to celebrating the winners with you. EAPA is a beacon of recognition for individuals and organizations whose philanthropic endeavors have left an indelible mark on society. More information about this landmark event will be forthcoming.
