COMMUNITY FOUNDATION STORIES FROM EAST AFRICA, 2025

40 Days Over 40 Smiles Foundation saw a gap in Kibuli, Makindye Division, Kampala. Children needed safe learning spaces. Teachers needed materials and training. The community needed infrastructure that didn’t exist.

In July 2023, they launched the Angaza Resource Centre at Merowa Junior School. A child-friendly space equipped with a computer laboratory and library. Free access to literacy materials, digital skills training, and a supportive environment. 250 children are served weekly.

The design serves two groups. For children: 1,500 in-school served, 500 out-of-school reached, increased confidence, better articulation, new digital literacy skills. For teachers: 300 supported with materials and digital tools, 200+ trained in phonics, ICT, learner-centered teaching, inclusivity, and early grade assessment. Free training strengthens entire school systems, not just individual classrooms.

Local resources built this. UGX 176 million from Ugandans. Individual and corporate partners making monthly donations starting at UGX 10,000. Fundraising events. Digital campaigns. Local networks connected 4040 to supporters who believed in the mission. The Merowa Junior School owner donated land. Schools, parents, and community leaders in Kibuli established trust and encouraged participation. Fully volunteer-driven. 4040’s team commits time, skills, and passion without salaries.

The First Angaza Day showcased children’s talents before 100+ parents and partners, demonstrating transformative impact when communities lead.

The lesson 40 Days Over 40 Smiles carries is clear. Local partnerships are game changers. Involving community members from the beginning creates stronger ownership and more meaningful impact. When communities shape the agenda and contribute to solutions, initiatives become more relevant, sustainable, and widely supported. Local people are not beneficiaries. They are partners who hold invaluable insight and power to drive long-term change.
